Day 26

It's been almost 4 full weeks, and I can hardly believe it, but it looks like I'm finally headed home. My blood counts have rised up to acceptable levels, and I've been able to drink enough on my own that they feel comfortable letting me out of this joint. I was actually supposed to head home today, but this morning I started feeling pretty awful, with flu-like symptons (severe stomach ache, and losing a lot of fluids), so they decided to keep me another day to monitor me. They're also doing all the normal blood cultures to make sure I don't have some sort of infection.

Assuming I don't feel any worse tomorrow I should be headed back to Albany! I've got quite a few restrictions on what I can and can't do, but basically I'm like an infant, and have enough strength to eat and sleep. It's a bit frusterating, but it's all part of the program. If all goes well I could be back to normal (i.e. working) in about 3 months, however some pople take as long as 6-12 months to get to that point. So it'll be a long road back, but I'm just taking it day by day at this point, otherwise it's a bit too overwhelming. So I should be in Albany for at least 1-2 months (minimum before I am allowed to fly), staying at my folks place. It'll be good since infants don't cook, clean, or do taxes well on their own.

Thanks to everyone who has visited and sent nice cards, emails, and left posts. You've all been helpful in getting be through this.

All the best,
-Jeff

Congratulations on finally being able to put this arduous stage behind you...your strength, positive attitude and determination are incredibly inspiring!

Piggybacking on your infant reference, here's a quote on children and their ability to believe from your buddy Lance:

“If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or Fight Like Hell.”

I found it incredibly applicable to everything you've been through. You're amazing!
